2024 - How To Live

How to get along with people, how to deal with violence, how to adjust to losing someone you love-such questions arise in most people’s lives. They are all versions of a bigger question: How do you live? This question obsessed Renaissance writers, none more than Michel Eyquem de Montaigne, considered by many to be the first truly modern individual.

Montaigne wrote free-roaming explorations of his thoughts and experience, unlike anything written before. Historical biographer and historian, Sarah Bakewell, will lead us through his life and thinking and the impact he had on those who followed.

Sarah Bakewell was born in Bournemouth on the English south coast, but spent most of her childhood in Sydney, Australia. having travelled for several years on the hippie trail through Asia with her parents. Returning to Britain, she studied philosophy at the University of Essex and worked as a curator of early printed books at London’s Wellcome Library for ten years before devoting herself to full-time writing in 2002.
